The concert concluding this year’s edition of the NFM Orchestra Academy will take place on April 27. It will be attended by NFM instrumentalists, participants of two orchestral academies—from the National Forum of Music in Wrocław and the Staatskapelle Berlin. The concert will be led by Chinese conductor Jong-Jie Yin, winner of the 11th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Conductors’ Competition. Kazakh violinist Meruert Karmenova—winner of the 2nd prize at the 16th Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition—will perform as a soloist.
The program includes Bolero by Maurice Ravel, the rarely-heard Cuban Overture by George Gershwin, and the 2nd Violin Concerto of Henryk Wieniawski, one of his most popular compositions. After the break, the orchestra will perform Henryk Wars‘s City Sketches, which was written in the early 1950s after the composer’s emigration to the US. The manuscripts of this suite and Wars’s other little-known orchestral concert works from the period were donated as part of the Henryk Wars Collection at the USC Polish Music in 2005, and have since gained popularity on Polish and US stages.
