The Polish Radio Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio in Warsaw will be the site of celebrations for Zygmunt Krauze’s 60th anniversary of work as a composer. Scheduled for December 16, the concert—entitled “Tren”—will feature a selection of works by the distinguished laureate in performance by the Lutosławski Piano Duo (Emilia Karolina Sitarz and Bartek Wąsik) as well as the Silesian String Quartet. Compositions by Tomasz Sikorski and Claude Debussy will also be heard on this program.

The highpoint of the evening will be the world premiere of Krauze’s Tren pamięci Krzysztofa Pendereckiego [Threnody in Commemoration of Krzysztof Penderecki], written especially for this concert. According to the composer,

The idea for this work arose spontaneously, immediately after the tragic news of Maestro Penderecki’s death. This composition expresses energy, strength and determination that defined Penderecki’s creative output. It also expresses pain due to the loss of this great artist. The work has five sections based on the ancient Greek threnody structure: exordium, laudatio, comploratio, consolatio, and exhortatio. As such, Tren pamięci Krzysztofa Pendereckiego does not include any stylistic references to Penderecki’s music. The entirety of this work is conveyed in my own musical language that is highly emotional in character.

Jointly organized by Polish Music Publishers [PWM] and Polish Radio Program 2, the Krauze celebration will be carried in a live radio broadcast. Organized by the Kwadrofonik Society, this concert was made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
