Coloratura soprano Malia Bendi Merad, one of the many scholars who visited the PMC over the last few months, contacted us in April with an interest in studying Karol Szymanowski’s Songs of a Fairy Tale Princess, Op. 31. During several hours spent in our library, Bendi Merad not only poured over the score of these brilliant and challenging songs, but also listened to several recordings and received coaching on the Polish texts and background information from PMC Director Marek Zebrowski. Having recently finished a tour as Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute with director Peter Brook, Bendi Merad will now go on to perform the Szymanowski in Spain with pianist Olena Blagulyak at the Málaga Classica Festival on May 27, 2016. Szymanowski’s Myths – Three poems for violin and piano, Op. 30 will also be performed by Anna Margrethe Nilsen – violin and Josu de Solaun – piano on the same program, entitled “Fairy Tales & Myths.”
