The AUREA PORTA Foundation of Friends of the Arts [Fundacja Przyjaciół Sztuk AUREA PORTA] has been expanding the repository of works by Polish composer, Bogusław Schaeffer (1929-2019). For over a decade, they’ve preserved, archived and digitized countless materials connected with Schaeffer. Some of the manuscripts within the collection were extremely fragile due to poor storage conditions in Schaeffer’s home in Kraków.
In 2023, the foundation produced a series of “score videos” that feature Schaeffer’s scores for the viewers to follow. His musical notation often doesn’t code the actual pitch of the notes, but rather presents musical ideas through unique markings that are meant to be subjectively interpreted by performers. Therefore, adding scores synchronized with the performance videos enhances the experience for listeners.
Alongside Krzysztof Penderecki, Bogusław Schaeffer was a member of the avant-garde “Cracow Group.” He was also one of the top theoreticians and musicologists of his generation, and had a great impact on countless students of contemporary music in Poland and abroad. His Klavier Konzert was featured in the David Lynch film Inland Empire (2006).
