Since they kicked off the Paderewski Festival in 2019, the Ensemble for These Times (E4TT) has been doing all of their performances virtually this season, allowing viewers from other cities, states, and even continents to enjoy their thoughtful performances. As a part of their ongoing ‘Jewish Music & Poetry Project,’ this Bay-area based group continues to feature forgotten Polish music on their programs.
The finale of the ensemble’s “Emigrés & Exiles in Hollywood” series will take place on Saturday, June 12 at 7:30pm Pacific Time, streamed for FREE from the Center for New Music (register at eventbrite.com). The series is a multi-year exploration focused on rarely heard chamber works and movie arrangements by film composers who fled Europe in the 1930s and ‘40s. Many of these composers went on to win multiple Academy Awards, creating the characteristic Hollywood sound that shaped what we hear at the movies today. These works are juxtaposed with chamber music by Polish composers of that same era. The event will include a virtual post-concert Meet and Greet around 8:30 pm via Zoom.
The finale program features five “Hollywood” émigré composers and four additional Polish composers who survived WWII either in Poland, France or Russia: Grażyna Bacewicz, Hanns Eisler, Szymon Laks, Miklós Rózsa, Alexandre Tansman, André Tchaikowsky, Franz Waxman, Mieczysław Weinberg and Eric Zeisl.
