On January 24, a concert at the Łódź Philharmonic conducted by Tomasz Gołębiewski and featuring 13-year-old Ryan Martin Bradshaw, a talented Slovak pianist, with the string section of the Łódź Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. The program included works by Wojciech Kilar and Krzysztof Penderecki, as well as W. A. Mozart and Edvard Grieg.
Krzysztof Penderecki’s Three pieces in Old Style were originally composed as film music, whereas Orawa by Wojciech Kilar—a well-known composer of both classical and film music—is his most popular symphonic work. The latter piece was inspired by the Podhale folklore and belongs to a series of works devoted to the Tatra mountains. The cycle of Three pieces in Old Style is a pastiche of 18th-century music, in which Penderecki makes use of nearly untransformed elements of historical sound language. Early music also inspired Edvard Grieg, whose suite From Holberg’s Time was written on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of the Danish writer Ludwig Holberg.
