The 4th Kwadrofonik Festival will take place between June 11 – July 2, 2018 in Warsaw, with performances and events centered around the theme of tradition.
Among the Festival performers are the ElettroVoce Duo (singer Agata Zubel and composer/electronic artist Cezary Duchnowski) and Kwadrofonik (pianists Emilia Sitarz and Bartek Wąsik and percussionists Magdalena Kordylasińska-Pękala and Miłosz Pękala – pictured at right). They see tradition as a point of departure for expressing themselves and their principles, mindset and perception. They stay faithful to the past, while using the language of their peers to develop new contexts for human voice and sound possibilities of traditional instruments. This combined ensemble opened the festival on June 11 with Szymanki kurpianowskie and Mazurki, inspired by Karol Szymanowski.
German cellist Anja Lechner performed on June 18. She has released more than 20 albums through ECM Records and sees traditional music as a source of inspiration, frequently combining distant cultures and music genres. Her performance bridged the performance of modern solo cello works by Lechner and Valentyn Sylvestrov to those of Johan Sebastian Bach and Friedrich Abel.
On June 25, Kwadrofonik and singer Adam Strug will perform Folk Requiem. Strug, a master of traditional song, creates a whole new quality in folk music by combining the 18th century funeral tunes with modern instrumentation and performance techniques. The result is a terrifying but enchanting vision of a man’s last journey.
The duo called Bardo (singer Barbara Kinga Majewska and Bartek Wąsik) will perform a program of “Songs” on July 2. This tribute to song carries the traditional formula into modernity. The duo moves beyond categories and genres, relying on simplicity, intimacy and classic sound, discreetly highlighted by electronics.
Dedicated to reviving local music tradition and cultivating interest in indigenous sound, Kapela Niwińskich has prepared musical workshops for children similar to the play that would be seen in Mazovian villages. These featured violins, basolias and frame drums, all of which are characteristic of Mazovian folk bands.
