On January 19, the LA Phil New Music Group presents a program of premieres entitled “Contemporary Poland” at Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Led by maestro Łukasz Borowicz, the ensemble will be joined by soloists Burt Hara, clarinet and Agata Zubel, soprano. The 8:00 p.m. concert will be preceded by Upbeat Live, a pre-concert talk with composer and USC faculty member Veronika Krausas, at 7:00 p.m.

As a part of the renowned Green Umbrella series, the beating heart of a vibrant Poland will resound through Disney Hall in a program of works by five visionary composers, from Krzysztof Penderecki to Agata Zubel, who will sing the world premiere of her own Chapter 13 for soprano and ensemble. The text to this 9-minute piece comes from the 13th chapter of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Also, the LA Phil’s own Burt Hara plays the haunted, lyrical and thoroughly virtuoso Sinfonietta that Penderecki arranged from his popular Quartet for clarinet and string trio.

Full Program:

Krzysztof MEYER  Musique scintillante (U.S. premiere)

Paweł MYKIETYN  3 for 13 (West Coast premiere)

Krzysztof PENDERECKI  Sinfonietta No. 2 for clarinet and strings (West Coast premiere)

This event is supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the Polska Music Program, in partnership with Polish Music Editions (PWM) and the Polish Music Center at USC’s Thornton School of Music.
