The Monster’s Voice is a new opera with music by renowned composer Alek Nowak and acclaimed librettist Robert Bolesto, and staged by visionary film director Agnieszka Smoczyńska.
Premiering on June 27 and 28 at Aula Artis in Poznań during the Malta Festival, this original production fuses myth with contemporary reality, exploring themes of identity, alienation, and survival. The main character is a curator of a contemporary art exhibition entitled “The Extermination of the Medusas.” He feels a connection with Medusa and her tragic story. The libretto centers on the theme of annihilation and the loss of identity
With music leaning toward twelve-tone technique and a chamber-like orchestration, Nowak’s score reflects the opera’s psychological depth and emotional precision. Countertenor Jan Jakub Monowid stars in the title role, supported by a top-tier creative team including set designer Jagna Dobesz, lighting designer Aleksandr Prowaliński, costume designer Katarzyna Lewińska, choreographer Tomasz Wygoda, and makeup artist Monika Kaleta.
Following its premiere in Poznań, The Monster’s Voice will be presented by the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk on July 12 as part of the Baltic Opera Festival, and later this fall in Warsaw at the Eufonie Festival.
