Scope and Contents
The Henryk Wars Manuscript Collection consists of a diverse array of materials, including orchestral and popular music manuscripts, printed scores, Wars’s caricatures and other artwork, recordings, movies featuring Wars’s music, photographs, and additional materials. These materials help understand Wars’s musical career and personal life. In 2024, the orchestral manuscripts of Henryk Wars from this collection have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Biographical / Historical
Henryk Wars (Henryk Warszawski), born in 1902 in Warsaw, Poland, and later known as Henry Vars in the US, was a prolific composer primarily recognized for his film scores and popular songs. Influenced by American Jazz, he composed beloved hits like “Umówiłem się z nią na dziewiątą” and “Miłość ci wszystko wybaczy” for Polish musicals. Despite facing the upheaval of war, serving in the Polish Army and enduring German captivity, he continued his musical journey, eventually settling in the US in 1947. There, he established himself in the film industry and garnered numerous awards. His compositions continue to resonate, yet his broader musical contributions remain relatively unknown. Despite this, his legacy endures through his compositions, including classical works like the Sonatina for Orchestra, dedicated to Maurice Ravel.

Maalot was written in response to his feelings about children all over the world—Henry had a special affinity with children. Maalot was performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. The recording of the concert was made and is held by Henry Vars’ son, Robert. This composition was taken by the publisher, Merlin [Robert Music Inc.], and used in a song in London. The musical material for Piano Concerto comes from a song written by Henry to the lyrics by Feliks Konarski. The tune ‘Po mlecznej drodze’ [Along the Milky Way] was originally written for the Second Corps during the Second World War, and performed by the duo of Gwidon Borucki and Renata (Anders) Bogdańska. Notes: Wars recreated the score for his Polish Parade show, Przy studni [At the well], in Hollywood in 1948. It is notated as an instrumental suite of the most popular folk dances of the time. It opens with a quiet introduction marked Sostenuto—poco rubato. The next section is a Kujawiak (Poco piú mosso), and a feisty Mazur (Piú animato) movement follows. This orchestral suite gains steam with a lively Oberek (Allegro—Piú vivo) that abruptly stops on a general pause. At that point the opening material returns in a more somber atmosphere and a much slower tempo (Adagio), but eventually recovers its momentum in the closing bars marked Andantino—Allegretto. This extended instrumental number was usually accompanied by several intricately choreographed dance numbers performed by the traveling theatre ensemble’s cast. [MZ]

As a young boy he walked to Poland on foot, eventually reaching Warsaw and literally living on the street. He wrote lyrics to many of Henry’s songs and was a great friend. After the war he lived in London, but eventually decided to emigrate to America. He settled in Chicago and was well received there. Unfortunately, he was never able to learn English well enough to speak or write it. He visited us in Los Angeles on numerous occasions—before and after Henry’s death.”
