A piano recital by Yukio Yokoyama celebrating the 77th anniversary of the death of Ignacy Jan Paderewski will be held on June 23 at the I. J. Paderewski Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz.
Yukio Yokoyama was born in Tokyo in 1971. At the age of 12, he started learning piano and composition under Jun Date and Masayuki Nagatomi, respectively. After receiving a French government scholarship in 1987, he began to study at the Paris Conservatoire under the guidance of Jacques Rouvier, Vlad Perlmutter and others. He graduated with honors in 1990, and won the third prize in the 12th Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw that year.
The June 23 Recital, organized in cooperation with the I. J. Paderewski Musical Society in Bydgoszcz, is part of Kuyavian-Pomeranian Governor Mikołaj Bogdanowicz’s “Niepodległa” program, celebrating 100 years of Poland’s independence. The pianist will perform works by Fritz Kreisler (Paderewski’s student), Fryderyk Chopin, Ignacy Jan Paderewski and Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as his own Hommage a Rachmaninov – Vocalise.
