Together with Polish Music Publishers (PWM Edition) and ANAKLASIS Records, the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań will present the online concert “The Legend Anew.” The concert will take place on September 7 at 6:00 p.m. CEST at the Bazar Hotel in Poznań, and will be broadcast via the Wieniawski Society’s YouTube channel.
The event coincides with the first day of the 16th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition (September 17-21, 2022). It also promotes the recently released record from the ANAKLASIS “Revisions” series entitled LEGEND (ANA 020), which is a look at Wieniawski’s works through the eyes of contemporary instrumentalists.
I’ve focused on chamber music in order to bring out as much colour in the violin itself and its changing sound as possible… I draw on history, but I approach it in a highly individual manner. My explorations are directed towards Wieniawski and his interest in folk music, but I also introduce many new contexts. On LEGEND, Wieniawski’s melodies are in some cases quoted in a nearly unaltered form, but they soon become motifs that undergo modern, sonoristic-type transformations…

The originator of this concert and recording, the illustrious violinist Adam Bałdych, took on the task of reinterpreting the most famous pieces by the “last Romantic virtuoso,” violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski. Drawing on history, he treated Wieniawski’s works in a very individualistic way by introducing new contexts and modern timbres. Besides Bałdych, the recording features the Adam Bałdych Quintet—Marek Konarski (tenor saxophone), Łukasz Ojdana (piano), Michał Barański (double bass) and Dawid Fortuna (percussion)—with the ambassador of the Wieniawski Competition, Agata Szymczewska (violin).
