The 23nd edition of the Gdańsk Carillon Festival will take place between 23 July and 28 August 2021. Special concerts from the towers of St. Catherine Church and the Main Town Hall in  Gdańsk, combined with a fountain show, will be held every Friday and Saturday. This year, all concerts will also be broadcast live on the Internet.

Among this year’s performers will be Monika Kaźmierczak, the city carillonist and the organizer of the Festival,  as well as carillonists Anna Kasprzycka, Gideon Bodden and Paul Maassen from the Netherlands, American Jeffrey Bossin from Berlin and the Polish-Japanese duo: Katarzyna Takao-Piastowska with her husband, Toru Takao. Apart from carillonists, there will also be Tubicinatores Gedanenses, NeoQuartet and the Gdańsk-Kraków duo Wood & Bronze. During the final concerts of the Festival (on 27 and 28 August), NeoQuartet and Paul Maassen will premiere works composed especially for the Festival: Arachne by Paul Maassen and Solaris by Katarzyna Kwiecień-Długosz – a work written in tribute to Polish writer and polymath, Stanisław Lem, whose 100th birth anniversary is celebrated this year.

Gdańsk is the only city in Poland that has working carillon instruments, consisting of bells weighing from several kilograms to several tons. Performing carillon pieces from the tower of the Main Town Hall is an almost 460-year-old tradition of Gdańsk, and the sounds of carillon have accompanied the most important city events.
