The 6th International Composition Competition “Sinfonietta per Sinfonietta: Hommage à Krzysztof Penderecki” has been settled and winners have been selected.

Sinfonietta Cracovia—the Orchestra of the Royal Capital City of Krakow—announced its 6th International Composition Competition as dedicated to the memory of Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki, who has been associated with the ensemble since the very beginning. The Competition is aimed at promoting young composers and broadening the repertoire for string orchestra. The subject of this year’s Competition was an original piece entitled Sinfonietta per Sinfonietta: Hommage à Krzysztof Penderecki, written for string orchestra and percussion.

This year’s Competition jury consisted of honorary chairwoman Elżbieta Penderecka and composers Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa, Eugeniusz Knapik, Marcel Chyrzyński and Jurek Dybał. On July 7, the jury reached its verdict, awarding the first prize ex æquo to Mr. Andrea Mattevi (Italy) and Mr. Robin Lilja (Sweden) for compositions both entitled Sinfonietta per Sinfonietta: Hommage à Krzysztof Penderecki.

The compositions of the first prize laureates will receive their premiere during the 6th edition of the Sinfonietta Festival, the dates of which will be announced in the next few weeks.
