On Sunday, March 29, the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust presents the Cracow Duo in a recital comprised of works by Jewish composers from Poland and the US.
Their program will include works by Roman Ryterband [Tryptique Contemporain], who fled Poland in 1939 and later settled in Palm Springs; Alexandre Tansman [Partita], who fled Europe for Los Angeles in 1941 and resumed his career in France after the war; and Jewish French-Polish composer Szymon Laks, whose skills as a musician spared him the daily physical labor of the Nazi camps and later his compositions and writings served as important witness to the Holocaust. The Cracow Duo will also perform Aaron Alter’s Theme and Variations on Lo Lanu Ha-Shem and the world premiere of Jarosław Płonka’s Elegia on the program.
Friends since childhood, Jan Kalinowski (cello) and Marek Szlezer (piano) began to perform together as the Cracow Duo over fifteen years ago. Since then, they have performed to critical acclaim in prestigious venues throughout the world, including Carnegie Hall. Kalinowski and Szlezer share a special commitment for music written by rarely performed Polish composers as well as works by contemporary Polish and foreign composers written for them. Cracow Duo’s artistic vision coupled with virtuosity and extensive concert experience create interpretations that are emotional, sincere and spontaneous.
This concert is presented by Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust in partnership with the USC Polish Music Center, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Los Angeles and the Polish Cultural Institute New York.
