At the invitation of the “Silesia” Institution for the Promotion and Dissemination of Music, counter-tenor Jakub Józef Orliński (above) and pianist Michał Biel performed their program entitled “Beauty and Perfection” twice in Poland as part of the “Opera Academy Invites” series: on June 3, 2018 at the Polish Radio Concert Studio in Katowice, and on June 8 at the Grand Theater – National Opera in Warsaw. A week later, they also performed the program to a sold-out crowd at Wigmore Hall in London.
After graduating from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music (Jakub Józef Orliński) and the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy (Michał Biel), they both attended the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York. While in the US, Orliński won the Grand Prix 2016 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Marcella Sembrich International Vocal Competition. Orliński and Biel have both performed in Carnegie Hall and at the Festival in Aix-en-Provence. These two young artists are also both laureates of the 9th Moniuszko Competition (2018), organized by the Grand Theater – National Opera in Warsaw: Orliński won the second prize in the male voice category, and Biel won the award for outstanding young pianist.
Their “Beauty and Perfection” program includes: Kurpie Songs by Karol Szymanowski; Four Love Sonnets by Tadeusz Baird; “Jesień” from Haiku by Paweł Łukaszewski; and works by Georg Friedrich Händel, Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert and Reynaldo Hahn.
