Polish composer, conductor, organist and teacher Feliks Nowowiejski was born 140 years ago on February 7, 1877. To celebrate the anniversary of his birth, the Feliks Nowowiejski Society from Poznań organized a series of events.
The celebration was started already on December 18, 2016, with a concert in Aula UAM in Poznań. The repertoire was varied including solo songs, ensembles, small orchestral pieces and choir music. The performers of the evening were: Choir of K. Marcinkowski Medical University, Piotr Kostrzewski’s ensemble, CoOperate orchestra under the baton of Adam Domurat, Katarzyna Hołysz, Paweł Łuczak, Aleksander Machalica, Jakub Koterba and Elżbieta Karolak.
On February 5, the Warmia and Mazury Philharmonic in Olsztyn will host the first concert this year celebrating the anniversary. The concert will be performed by tenor Szymon Rona, pianist Agnieszka Panasiuk, actress Irena Telesz, and the Cantores Varmienses Choir, under the baton of Benedykt Błoński. On February 7, an exhibition and concert will be held in Barczewo, where the composer was born. In Skarbiec Kultury Europejskiej (Grunwaldzka Street 15), at 5 p.m. doctor Jan Chłosta from the Center of Scientific Research in Olsztyn [Ośrodek Badań Naukowych) will give a lecture titled the Connections of Feliks Nowowiejski with Warmia Region. In addition, the conference will promote and release a post-event publication Warmia in the Times of Feliks Nowowiejski [Warmia w czasach Feliksa Nowowiejskiego. The concert will feature a Military Orchestra from Giżycko and a duo Maria-Isabella Jung/Sefuri Sumi. The organizers chose Maria-Isabella Jung not only for her skills as a soprano but also because she is a great-granddaughter of Leon Nowowiejski – the brother of the composer. After the performance of songs by Nowowiejski and Wagner by the duo, an exhibition titled The Genealogy of Nowowiejski’s House will take a place in Salon Muzyczny im. Feliska Nowowiejskiego (located at Mickiewicza 13). On February 8, Jung and Sumi will give another performance at the Salon muzyczny Feliksa Nowowiejskiego, Willa wśród róż
Nowowiejski spent WWI in Berlin serving as a member of a military orchestra. At the end of the war, he settled in Poznań where he actively participated in reviving the cultural life of the city by organizing symphonic, choral and organ concerts, and by working as a teacher. At that time, he composed several patriotic songs, arrangements of folk music (such as 25 Polish Folk Songs from Warmia), opera The Legend of the Baltic, choral compositions (Missa pro Pace, Missa Stella Maris) and cantatas.
