L.A.’s Polish church Our Lady of the Bright Mount is hosting a unique exhibition entitled “Anders’ Army,” devoted to the Polish Army General Władysław Anders as a fulfillment of a promise to his daughter, Senator Anna Maria Anders. From January 22 until February 12, the exhibition will be open to the public every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Organizers hope to attract young Poles to learn more about the dramatic history of the homeland of their parents and grandparents, presented in Polish and English.
This cultural display illustrates the fate of Polish prisoners of war held in Soviet camps during the Second World War and the movements of the Second Polish Corps, under Gen. Anders, as part of the Polish Armed Forces in the West serving on the Italian front. Anders’ army band, “The Polish Parade,” was led by Henryk Wars, who after the war became a resident of Los Angeles and wrote hit songs for such Hollywood films as Flipper. Wars’ archive of popular tunes as well as lesser known classical compositions can be further explored at the Polish Music Center, just down the street from Our Lady of the Bright Mount at USC.
