USC Thornton alumnus and previous PMC performer Marek Szpakiewicz (MM ’01, DMA ‘08) has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Cello Studies at Azusa Pacific University’s (APU) School of Music. Szpakiewicz has been teaching cello at APU since 2005 and currently serves as the Director of Chamber Music.
Szpakiewicz’s students have performed as soloists with the APU Symphony Orchestra and have won prizes at national and international competitions, including the International Cello Competition in Chile and the American Protégé International Piano and String Competition.
On Saturday, October15, Szpakiewicz will perform a program including Chopin, Schumann, Rachmaninoff and others with pianist Jiayi Shi. The concert is free and any collected donations (not required) will be used to purchase a 3/4-sized cello for the Soma Children’s Orchestra in Fukushima, Japan, organized by El Sistema Japan.
