On August 3, Polish clarinetist Barbara Borowicz will play a concert in the US dedicated exclusively to works by Polish composers, including world premieres of two new works commissioned by the performer: The Soul of Seul for clarinet and vibraphone by Ewa Fabiańska-Jelińska and Haiku No. 2 for clarinet and piano by Marcel Chyrzyński. Also on the program are Fragment H for clarinet and piano by Zbigniew A. Lampart and Three Miniatures for clarinet and piano by Krzysztof Penderecki. Borowicz will be joined on stage by pianist Ellen Sommer and percussionist Bartosz Sałdana for the concert, which will be held as a part of ClarinetFest at the historic University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
ClarinetFest is the world’s largest clarinet event, held annually in a different place. In 2016, the festival is organized in collaboration with the University of Kansas and participants representing over 20 countries from 6 continents will be present. This year’s ClarinetFest theme is “Inspirations,” focusing on five great clarinetists who inspired the creation of our greatest repertoire. These clarinetists are 18th-century Anton Stadler; 19th-century Heinrich Baermann, Johann Hermstedt and Richard Mūhlfeld; and 20th-century Benny Goodman. Performances and clinics will highlight the lives, careers and legacies of these clarinetists throughout the festival.
