Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecień is having great success in his current lead role in the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Georges Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles [The Pearl Fishers], produced by Penny Woolcock. According to culture.pl, the opera will be broadcast in HD in Poland on January 16 in selected venues, including Kino Praha and Teatr Studio in Warsaw, CK Zamek in Poznań and the Łódź Philharmonic.
In a review for the New York Times, Anthony Tommasini wrote:
Mr. Kwiecien is an ideal Zurga. Singing with burnished sound and lyrical richness, he looks like a natural leader, handsome, confident and something of an operator. […] In Act III, Zurga, who has the authority to stop the death sentence, confronts his conflicted feelings in an intense aria that provides Mr. Kwiecien one of his finest moments at the Met to date.
