Olimpia z Gdańska [Olympia of Gdańsk], a new opera by Polish composer Zygmunt Krauze, will be presented by the Opera Bałtycka in Gdańsk in its World Premiere performance on November 20, 2015. The main performers are Anna Mikołajczyk (Stanisława), Jan Monowid (Robespierre), and Monika Ledzion (Olimpia).

As described by Director Jerzy Lech, this opera “defies traditional narrative theater.” Written by Krystyna and Blaise de Obaldia, the libretto mingles the settings of 1930s Gdańsk and Revolutionary France, centering on a woman named Stanisława Przybyszewska who is writing a novel in one place about the other. Over the course of the opera’s story, time and relationships are shown to be porous and easily cross over into each other. Together with the main character in her novel, French Revolutionary icon Olimpia de Gouges, Stanisława not only takes part in the war but also undergoes a deep personal and ideological metamorphosis.
