As a part of their 2015/2016 season at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, the London Philharmonic Orchestra is presenting a series entitled “Riots, rebels and revolutionaries,” which explores how music has been used as a tool to explore the human experience, challenge our assumptions, and provoke debate through the ages. In this series, the LPO performs a range of works that promise to explore philosophical and political themes, from Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 1 and 7, to Stravinsky’s riot-inducing The Rite of Spring to Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima.
On October 14, the LPO’s “Riots…” program focused on the sonically and thematically intense music of Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki. The program included two UK premieres—Penderecki’s Adagio for Strings and his Horn Concerto ‘Winterreise’—and Penderecki’s unabashedly provocative Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, as well as Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6.
