Agata Zubel’s Cleopatra Songs will receive its world premiere on April 27 in Witten, Germany, during the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik Festival. The composer will be the soloist with the Klangforum Wien ensemble led by Emilio Pomàrico. The concert will be broadcast by WDR 3 radio.

Scored for voice and instrumental ensemble, Cleopatra Songs was inspired by the legendary love story of Anthony and Cleopatra, and Zubel used fragments of Shakespeare’s texts for her work. Cleopatra Songs was commissioned by Klangforum Wien and the ensemble is also a dedicatee of this composition. This is Zubel’s second commission from Klangforum Wien, with What is the Word (2012) representing her first opus ordered by that ensemble.
